How long will I need therapy for?
How long will therapy last?
It's one of the most common questions I get asked, and it's a fair one. Committing to something open-ended can feel daunting, especially if you're not sure what therapy actually involves yet.
The short answer is: there's no fixed contract. You are not signing up for a set number of sessions when you start working with me. You can end at any point, and how long we work together is entirely your decision.
That said, it's worth knowing how therapy tends to work in practice. Lasting change usually takes time. Most people find that coming weekly, at least to begin with is most effective. Showing up at the same time each week builds the relationship, and that relationship is a key part of what makes therapy successful.
Some people work with me for a few months, others for a year or more, particularly if what brings them is longstanding or complex. Some take a break and come back for more adhoc sessions. All of these are ok - you have full autonomy.
What I'd say to anyone anxious about committing is this: start with an initial session and see how it feels. You're not agreeing to anything beyond that one appointment. If it feels right to continue, we can talk about what might work for you. If it doesn't, that's okay too.
Therapy works best when you're there because you want to be, not because you feel you have to be. So while I'll always be honest with you about where I think the work is going, the pace and duration are yours to decide.
