Go Sober for October

Are you ready? Here are some tips for success…

There is nothing I like more than a good cup of tea - and if it’s with cake; even better! I decided to get sober 5 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made.

Every October, many people choose to take a break from alcohol for a month. Known as Sober October, it’s a chance to pause, reset, and notice what life feels like without drinking. Some join in to raise money for charity, others to improve health, and many simply to see if they can do it.

Why Try Sober October?

Alcohol often slips into daily life – after-work drinks, weekend plans, or a glass of wine (or 3…) at home. But when it becomes routine, it can be hard to see the bigger picture. A month off can:

  • Improve sleep, mood, and energy

  • Save money

  • Highlight drinking habits you hadn’t noticed

  • Build confidence and self-control

The Emotional Side

Sober October isn’t only about physical benefits. Without alcohol, feelings sometimes rise to the surface – stress, sadness, or anxiety that may have been masked by drinking. This can feel uncomfortable, but it’s also an opportunity to understand yourself more deeply. Having support from friends, family, or a counsellor can make this process easier.

Tips for a Successful Sober October

  • Plan ahead – Stock up on alcohol-free alternatives, lovely teas - and cake!

  • Tell people – Let friends know you’re taking part to reduce social pressure

  • Try new things – Replace drinking with activities that genuinely relax you

  • Notice the changes – Keep track of your sleep, mood, energy levels - and your savings! Apps like Sober Time, and I’m Done Drinking! are really handy for this and can really help with motivation

After October

Some people happily return to drinking, while others decide to cut back or even continue alcohol-free. Whatever you choose, taking part gives you valuable insight into your relationship with alcohol.

Perhaps you already know drinking isn’t serving you, or find you are unable to stop at one; I’ve been there so I know first hand how debilitating and difficult it can be, so you’re in safe hands. If you find yourself struggling or noticing that alcohol plays a bigger role in your life than you’d like, I can offer a safe and supportive space to explore this so get in touch to see how I can help.

Final Thoughts

Sober October isn’t about being perfect – it’s about giving yourself a chance to reflect and reset. Pressing pause on drinking - even for a short time - can bring clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of wellbeing.
